As a community club with a tight budget, historically, most investment in the Club has gone into our buildings and grounds (often out of necessity to maintain or upgrade things), with minimal investment in paid staff.
This has also meant we've been relying on our paid staff 'volunteering' a lot of extra time. Members may not be aware that, for example, Tobie (and Bar Managers before her) is paid for 20 hours a week but is essentially on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our pitches look as good as they do this year because Pat Briscoe and Andy Boorman have given hours and volunteer time on top of any paid hours.
We run on volunteer time, and the Club is massively indebted to those who volunteer their time to keep the Club running.
However, some core activities must be done consistently to keep the Club running and achieve the developments we keep discussing. So, we have decided to invest in people for these roles going forward and to better protect the line between paid work and ‘volunteering’ for our paid staff. As a result, we are now advertising for an Assistant Club Manager to work with Tobie and focus on promoting the Club.
This means there will be changes coming once an appointment is made. Although Tobie and the new Assistant Manager will share the week between them, they will be jointly responsible for managing the whole Club (not just the bar). Neither expected to be 'on call' all the time nor to use their personal contact details for club work.
