Season Greetings from your New Chairman

I am honoured and excited to have been asked to stand for Chairman at last’s week AGM and having the opportunity to continue the work started by Steve Davies who has helped stabilise the club’s finances, initiated many improvements and devoted an immeasurable amount of his time to have the club we have today.
I am also lucky that the club’s committee are a dedicated group of people, and the exceptional hardworking Tobie, who I hope will give me the same level of support as they gave to Steve.

I am keen to find out what members like and dislike about the club. I would be delighted to hear of any ideas that you might have for ways to raise our profile or of possible new activities. So whether it is a gripe, a thumbs-up, or a great idea please drop me an email and I will respond.

My own thoughts are that we need to continue looking at ways to increase income into the club both by attracting more members and through commercial activities. I want to see our club as a ‘hub’ for social, sporting, and perhaps cultural activities for the area, after all we are only a stone’s throw from the centre of Hythe and have some superb facilities which are not used to their full potential.

To become that “hub” we need to promote ourselves better; embracing social media will be essential to any plan to attract anyone under thirty. We will also need to understand why many people in the area simply do not know that we are here or what we have to offer, and then rectify the problem.

Whilst cricket was once the mainstay of the club, we have been unable to attract players in recent times, in 2018 we sometimes struggled to raise a full team. Cricket has been played at The Grove for over one hundred and sixty years, and I would not want it to fade away.

Squash and Racketball are both thriving, football goes from strength to strength and on the non-sport side we have an excellent social programme, but we need to consider other activities that provide both new members and additional revenue. Plus, we need to develop a stronger working relationship with the Tennis Club.

This gives you a flavour of what I would like to see, but you may have different views, so let me know what you think and I will discuss with the committee at our next meeting.

Seasonal Greetings to you and your families.

Kind regards
Philip Carter
Chairman
