Wacketball woes (Or it all goes wrong in Dover)

Dover Sports Centre is an impressive-looking building built at Whitfeld and opened in February 2019 it is very “shiny” and unlike many similar facilities seems to have been designed and built by people who know a bit about sport. With ample car parking and cages for five-a-side football outside and great facilities within it is very busy. The two glass-back squash courts are located close to the reception area, and like the rest of the place are immaculate.

Monday is Squash and Racketball club night, although there was not a Squash racket to be seen as ever more move to “The Dark Side.” The evening was well under way when we arrived, but they all shuffled over onto one court and we were off!

This was a first team match but with players drawn from both squads, partly because Mr Good was still reclining on his settee with a bad back, and partly because no-one can remember which team they represent.

The four players Julian Belcher, Mel Booth, Rick Roddy and at Number one Dave Brewer were all somewhat unprepared for the speed of the ball as it flew of the racket and appeared to accelerate again after hitting the front wall. Various strategies were used to even things up, including Dave who eye-butted his opponent’s racket to no avail. The result was a sound thrashing for Hythe, with not a game to show we resisted a bit.

In the pub down the road, where we retired to lick our wounds and make excuses, there was a quiz under way: question “What Asian city has the most Ice Breakers?” A little pause for thought, “Vladivostok” I said. Eyes swivelled, “Probably Hong-Kong,” said Rick. I continued “There isn’t any ice in Hong Kong harbour, Vladivostok on the other hand…” Evidently, I should have heard Skyscrapers and not Icebreakers, so I bought another pint and we decided to give the quiz a miss.

Our next match is at home to Canterbury and according to the very affable Dover crowd they are very good; I wonder if there is a quiz I could go to on that night?
