Is our Club a safe and welcoming place?

Dear Club Members

I write to ask for your help. When we join the Club we all sign up to a Code of Conduct that commits us to ‘maintain standards of behaviour appropriate to a family environment’. We now all need to do some work to maintain that standard.

Drugs

There has been evidence of illegal drug use on our premises, and we will be sharing CCTV images with the Police.

Our Code of Conduct states that members and guests MUST NOT ‘carry, supply or use prohibited drugs on club premises’ . Anyone found to be doing so will be asked to leave the premises, we will inform the police, and their membership will be cancelled with immediate effect.

I am sure all of you who have worked so hard over the years to make our club a safe and welcoming place will share my sadness and anger that there are people disrespectful, selfish and irresponsible enough to bring illegal drugs onto our premises.

If you see, hear or suspect drug use on our premises please report it to the police on 101, to Crimestoppers online or 0800 555 111, or contact me on 07952 671382.

Please be very clear with anyone using or carrying drugs that this will not be tolerated at our club.

Language & Behaviour

The Report into Equity in Cricket released by the ECB this week described a ‘rotten culture’ where ‘racism, sexism, classism and elitism’ are widespread. Many of the incidents reported to the Commission (including evidence submitted from our club) took place in clubhouse bars and communal areas. This is not just a cricket problem.

Nothing changes unless we change it.

So, please, when you hear inappropriate language or see inappropriate behaviour in our club, challenge it. If it is having immediate impact on someone, call it out and stop it. If it is in general conversation call it in – take that person aside, share your understanding, and explain that the language they are using is not appropriate. Words thought to be acceptable 20 years ago now are not.

This is everyday stuff. If you hear someone making one of our bar staff uncomfortable with patronising sexist remarks, someone making racist or homophobic comments, or swearing excessively, please step in, and remind them of our club commitment to treating everyone with courtesy and respect.

If the behaviour is repeated, report it, to me or any member of our Committee.

If you have 3 minutes (surely we can all find 3 minutes in the day!), this is worth a watch:

Not-racist v anti-racist: what’s the difference? The same applies to being anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, anti-classist.

Call it out. Stop it. Report it.

Thank you for your help in keeping our club the safe place we all deserve.
