Clash of the Racketball Giants

On Thursday evening, Hythe 1st and 2nd RACKETBALL teams met for their first home derby. With John Good side-lined due to injury, there was a little bit of re-jigging required, but at 7.15, the fun began!

First on the court were Julian Belcher and Matt Day; with Matt easily winning the first game, Julian came back strongly to win a tight second. The match continued to seesaw as the packed gallery cheered on both players. Eventually, Julian scraped over the line for the narrowest of victories.

Meanwhile, Sue Giles took on Philip Carter on (a still slightly damp) court 1. With the emphasis on line and length, the match was a series of punishing and high-quality rallies, with Sue drawing first blood to lead 1-0. Philip came back strongly and took the next three very tight games.

Back on court No2, a slog-fest was developing between Michael Galvan and David Hounsell, and although Michael won 3-0, the games were much closer than shown by the final score as each player pushed for a win.

Finally, it was the battle of the Number Ones as Dave Brewer and the newly promoted Lee Divers took to the court, and what a game it was as Dave pummelled the ball and Lee recovered superbly. A joy to watch it end 3-1 to Dave with a round of applause from the spectators.

So who won the battle? In matches, it was two all, and in games, it was eight all, so officially, it was a DRAW. But by counting the scores, the second team scraped home by four points, but no one really cared; there was beer and snacks in the bar and a whole season to look forward to.

Next home matches:
Team two Tuesday 15th November - Dover
Team one Thursday 17th November - Canterbury
