Walter Tull Symposium

Symposium
‘Walter Tull: His Footballing Legacy’

Thursday, January 24th 2019, 7.00-9.30pm at Folkestone Quarterhouse

Coming to Folkestone this January is a special evening of talks about diversity in modern football, inspired by the life of one of the first Black professional footballers, Walter Tull.

This symposium, 100 years after the tragic death in WW1 of Folkestone-born Walter, asks what is Walter's legacy? How has the game changed for Black footballers; do they still face individual racism? Do institutional barriers to career progression still exist for players, coaches and managers?

The evening will feature a series of presentations, a panel discussion and Q&A with distinguished ex-players and high-profile campaigners working in the field of Equality and Diversity in sport including:

Tony Whelan, former player and Academy Programme Advisor at Manchester United Football Club
FIFA (The Fédération Internationale de Football Association)
The PFA (Professional Footballers Association)
Kick It Out
Show Racism the Red Card
Football Unites Racism Divides
Phil Vasili, Author and Biographer of ‘Walter Tull 1888 to 1918 Footballer and Officer’ and Leon Mann, sports journalist, writer, film-maker and founder of Football’s Black List, celebrating achievement by players of African and Caribbean descent.

Tickets are £5 available in advance from Folkestone Quarterhouse: quarterhouse.co.uk / 01303 760750

Folkestone Museum is delighted to be supported on this event by Shepway Sports Trust and The Roger de Haan Charitable Trust.

Please bring some cash along with you on the night as we will be raising money for Shepway Sports Trust through donations on the door.
