Hythe Runners-Up in inaugural Smash Finals!
Glorious sunshine and baking hot weather greeted the four teams at The Grove for Finals Day of inaugural Hythe Smash competition on Saturday 9th September.
The Hythe lads took on Hythe Green in the first semi-final. Batting first, we made 132-5 in our 20 overs - with captain Matt Ford making an impressive 67no and being supported with some late big hitting from Matt Cobb (16). Hythe Green were never really up with the run rate after a promising start. When Henry Large dismissed their opener at 72-4, Cam Potter mopped up the rest - taking his first ever hat-trick on his way to figures of 4-8! We ran out winners by 27 runs.
The second semi-final saw Saltwood take on Willesborough. Saltwood struggled early on in the heat and against some very good bowling. They recovered somewhat to finish on 105-9. But that total never looked enough for Willesborough's strong batting line up and they got home with a 6 wicket win and 3 overs to spare.
And so, to the Final...! Willesborough won the toss, batted first and got off to a flyer, with 38 runs coming off the first 3 overs- perhaps the Hythe lads were still thinking about the BBQ?! But when Matt Cobb dismissed the dangerous Malik, Hythe were right back in the game and then wickets fell at regular intervals. This time it was Henry Large's time to shine, as he was twice on a hat-trick and ended up with a brilliant 5-22 from his 4 overs. Willesborough were all out for 113. Hythe needed a fast start, but some good bowling only saw us being steady and we were always behind the run rate worm. There were good contributions from Matt Ford (15), Tim Pichowski (17) and Henry Large (15no), but we kept losing wickets at vital times, as we strove for the much-needed boundaries. We finished on 88-9 after the 20 overs - Willesborough winning by 25 runs.
All three games were played in a great spirit, and there was much positivity around the club from all competing teams, both for the day and the league that preceded it. Congratulations to Willesborough on their victory! Planning has already started for the 2024 competition - when the Hythe boys aim to go one better!
Special thanks to Reagan and Kirsty for running the bar and organising the food. Martin for manning the BBQ all day, and to Ollie and John Osborn for the live scoring and the music throughout the day. Over £2,200 taken over the bar during the day, which was an amazing amount.
